Students have been busy, not just with the business of learning, but learning how to set goals.
In our literacy curriculum students have been gathering data about their literacy habits and their volume of reading and writing. They are setting goals to increase their skills and stamina. In Math we have been pushing ourselves to make sure we have our math fact groups to 12 memorized. This will make fractions and algebraic learning so much easier. When your brain is busy figuring out 6X8 it isn't able to think about the bigger mathematical questions. You can help!

In addition to having your child share the details of their day with you while they empty their Home folder, keep an eye out for the following important notices:
1. A letter in an envelope addressed to you with information on the Robert Crowne Center about the Human Growth and Development Family Night. These should be returned by March 8th so that the district can plan for the close to 600 5th grade families! 2. Permission slip Field trip to the Springman Musical. We will be attending the morning of February 28th, anxious to see old Hoffman friends and get excited for our own Hoffman musical experience! 3. Six Flags read for a free ticket program. These need to be returned to school by February 25th so be tallied and sent in through our PTA for processing. Our conferences will focus on academic strengths and areas for growth. If there are particular items that you would like to discuss, please let me know in advance, as 15 minutes goes by quickly!
At the beginning of the school year I decided that students should take ownership of their Assignment Spirals as an organizing and planning tool. Unlike in 4th grade, some 5th grade teachers do not sign off on Assignment Notebooks.
During fall conferences three families determined that their student needed a teacher/parent check of the Assignment Notebook. Those students who had a commitment to an adult waiting at home to hear about their day and see what homework was required were more motivated to take the responsibility to have me check their planners each day. Based on feedback from families after report cards, it became clear that many families are unclear about what is expected in terms of academic practice at home. Based on feedback from students, they feel that the Assignment notebook is a waste of paper, and they see no reason to use one. This week students will be receiving a brand new LIFE PLANNER as a tool. Here is how you can help us!
Here is how I will modify our use of this new tool . (Never to be called an Assignment Notebook again.)
