Students discovered how pollution gets into our water systems. Yuck! Topic/Unit Name Earth Systems Essential Questions What are the earth’s major systems? (5.ESS2.1) How do these systems interact? (5.ESS2.1) Where is water located on Earth? (5.ESS2.2) Where is fresh water located on Earth? (5.ESS2.2) What is the human impact on the earth’s systems? (5.ESS3.1) Students have been exploring the Earth's systems and are now putting everything together to see how these systems are impacted by human activities. They are using their persuasive skills in writing to make a proposal about how we can make micro changes in our own lives and what steps scientists, engineers and inventors are suggesting to mitigate those effects. We have begun our first Science Unit of the year. Properties of Matter. We are so lucky to have a new Science Teacher on Staff who is supporting our learning and helping run our laboratories. We have been enjoying using hot plates and graduated flasks and investigating the visible and invisible (molecular level) changes using mystery powders, ice cubes and balloons as well as investigating the densities of water, oil and dishsoap.

Click here for videos of our bubble lab! Our second unit in Science involves answering another concept that is largely unseen: how energy moves within an ecosystem to support life. The atmosphere (air), the geosphere (rocks and soil), hydrosphere (water) all create an ecosystem that may support plants, animals and even microorganisms. Most of the major work of 5th grade scientists are to explain processes that are difficult to see.
Matter and Energy in Organisms Ecosystems Essential Questions -What do plants need to grow in different environments? (PE: LS1.1) -Do plants need soil to grow? (PE: LS1.1) -How do plants capture sunlight to make food? (PE: LS1.1) -How do Animals Obtain Energy? (PE: PS3.1) Ask your child to describe how scientists use models to describe things that are invisible! Request an update on the data they are collecting on an experiment with plants: are their predictions coming true? Can plants live without, water, soil, air or light? Students have been busy learning about safety in the laboratory and investigating properties of matter from visible properties down to the molecular level. (see: classroom photo page!)
